You already know, deep inside your heart, what you need to do to lose weight.
You already know, what you need to do to be healthy.
And I know…that you know this.
Yet – why is it still a struggle?
Why do you still eat an entire block of chocolate, when you know that it will be followed by feelings of guilt and the need to “exercise it off” (which, by the way – does not actually work).
I attended a talk by Dr Libby this week titled The Road To Sustainable Weight Loss. She talked about…well, a lot of different things related to the body and achieving a healthy one.
She opened with a question “Why do you do what you do, when you know what you know?” and then went on to explore the emotions behind our actions, and the role of the autonomic nervous system in weight loss – especially when it comes to stress.
Essentially, Dr Libby’s message was that “our behaviour is the outer expression of our beliefs” and she had some pretty amazing client stories to share to show how this is true.
The main takeaway of her talk? Dr Libby explained the biochemistry of what goes on in our body – in a very simple way.
Basically, you have a central nervous system and an autonomic nervous system.
Your central nervous system is your conscious, working mind. While your autonomic nervous system is your subconscious – it plays a role in ensuring that your heart beats, your finger nails grow etc.
Your autonomic nervous system is further split into 2 – your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).
For your body to function optimally, you need to activate both your SNS and PNS. In today’s world, with all the constant stress you are under, your SNS is constantly active – it’s very hard to switch it off – and it relies on a constant turnover of glucose (which you happily provide it with) and never taps into your fat stores.
Activating your PNS demonstrates to your body that you are safe (as opposed to activating your SNS, where your body has a “fight or flight” response).
Activating your PNS allows your body to tap into your fat stores.
So how do you activate your PNS?
According to Dr Libby, the ONLY science research out there is that you need to lengthen your exhale breath – so make sure you are breathing deeply.
Her own personal tip? Focus on deep diaphragmatic breathing (stay tuned for a video showing you how to do this).
I was inspired by Dr Libby’s message and I am making a conscious decision to lengthen my exhale.
And true to my word, I will be adding in a section to my new online program, about activating your PNS for effective, effortless fat loss. If you would like to learn more, enter your details below to get on the invite list for the launch of my new program.
Have a great weekend,
