5 things I no longer believe about Weight Loss – Part 2 (of 3)
In part 1 of this blog, which I posted last week (if you missed it please click here to have a read), I wrote about how ridiculously large the weight loss industry is, while also commenting that the results do not seem to reflect this, as waistlines are gradually increasing worldwide.
One of the big reasons for this, I believe, is due to toxins in our food.
I was chatting to another naturopath earlier today (my good friend Kate Powe) about weight loss and more specifically, fat loss.
We were throwing some ideas around and discussing methods and protocols that other naturopaths in our industry use for treating their clients.
And then Kate and I came to the conclusion that, unless you’ve been through your own weight loss journey, all the research in the world does not make you qualified to hand out advice on the best methods for fat loss.
My year after high school involved travelling overseas as I took a much needed gap year before I started uni.
In the first 3 months of my gap year, I put on 12kg – and it stuck with me for the rest of the year, until I came home.
I was seeing a naturopath at various stages during this year, as I worked on other aspects of my health – but she was concerned about my weight gain, and it took her a little while to pinpoint exactly why I had put on so much weight so quickly.
It was due to a certain toxin in the food I was eating.
In the last 20-30 years, food manufacturers have become very clever. Or so they think.
They discovered that it’s possible to imitate the taste of certain foods by creating their own synthetic substances in a factory.
While this may be clever for their business – it means a cheaper method of creating food – it’s not so clever for your health.
Which brings me to the third thing on my list of 5 things I no longer believe about achieving a bikini body for summer (you can see numbers 1 & 2 by clicking here):
3. If you put foreign chemicals into your body, your body will respond by either storing it as fat, or using it as a contributor to disease. Toxins disturb your body’s natural processes which allows for it to take the nutrients it needs from food, and discard the rest. Toxins cause your body to hold on to fat.
There are quite a few which have made their way into our food chain – but to keep it simple, I’ll share with you my personal definition of a toxin:
Any substance that has been synthetically produced and added to food to improve its taste, texture or simply to extend its shelf life.
The BEST way to avoid toxins, is to eat whole foods – foods which are unprocessed, in their natural state, with nothing added to them.
Unfortunately many foods in the health food aisles of supermarkets and in health food stores still contain toxins – learn to read labels and avoid buying and eating anything you don’t understand the name of.
And on that note, I’m off to make a large pot of pure vegetable soup – no stock or cubes – just pure whole vegetables, boiled up in hot water, with some salt, pepper and natural herbs for added flavour.

PS In case you were wondering – after my naturopath advised me of how toxins were causing my body to hold on to fat, I completely cut them out – and my weight started to drop, almost instantly!
